GEORGE TOWN, Penang, September 23, 2014 –  In May 2013, Intel Malaysia received recognition from Aon Hewitt not only as Best Employer but also as Best Employer for Commitment to Engagement. Following the recognition – which also saw Intel in Korea and China acknowledged in the same year as Best Employer as well – Intel Malaysia has today hosted a tour of its facilities in Penang to share one of the key aspects that makes it a great place to work; facilities, programs and policies that promote and advance workplace wellness and health.

Prema (name has been changed to protect privacy), an employee at Intel Malaysia in her forties, had the Registered Nurses at Intel Malaysia’s Health for Life Occupational Health clinic sound a warning about the state of her health. Based on her weight and height ratios, she was informed about the potential dangers she faced including health risks like type 2 diabetes and the increased possibility of developing some kinds of cancer. And so what started out as a routine health check-up provided by Intel Malaysia for all its employees turned into a quest – and a successful journey – for Prema back to health and a better quality of life.

“I have been mostly deskbound for much of my career. At my heaviest I was over 100 kg and even before I received my warning, I was already having breathing difficulties and suffered from occasional bouts of sleep apnea,” said Prema at a media tour of Intel Malaysia’s facilities in Bayan Lepas, Penang. “In addition to giving me advice on how to change to a healthier lifestyle, I was also diagnosed with a glandular problem that may have contributed to my dangerous weight gain.”

After the diagnosis, Prema underwent surgery and upon her recovery, went on a strict diet and exercise regimen under the guidance of Intel Malaysia’s clinic.

“The routine health check that I participated in may have saved my life and for that I am very thankful,” said Prema. “Since I set out on consciously achieving a healthier lifestyle, I have lost 22 kg and nearly won a weight loss challenge organized by Intel Malaysia. I’ve even signed up to participate in a national weight loss challenge and target to lose an additional 20 kg to attain my ideal weight.”

Prema is one of Intel Malaysia’s employees to benefit from its comprehensive health and wellness programs. In addition to a full service occupational health clinic, Intel has put in place measures and policies to maintain and ensure the health and safety of each and every one of their employees at every level – from manufacturing technicians all through to high ranking executives.

“Intel values the health of every employee equally and maintains a broad portfolio of programs designed to encourage employees to evaluate, improve, and maintain their health and that of their families,” said Suresh Chandra, Human Resources Director, Intel Malaysia. “For example, we have in place a web based Office Ergonomic Training program available to all employees providing guidance on everything from safe behaviors in hallways, aisles and stairs all the way to waste management. The program also covers the principles of ergonomics and how to apply them to improve the quality of our employee’s life at work and at home. As a result of our continued focus on health and safety in the workplace, Intel and its employees enjoy many benefits including a significant reduction of work days taken off for health reasons.”

“We also actively partner with our employees in building a culture of health. As a caring employer, we provide both opportunities and incentives to employees to proactively manage their health,” added Tan Joo Shiuh, Country EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) & BES (Building and Employee Services) Manager, Intel Malaysia. “Our 3-Step Wellness program exemplifies our market leading approach to healthcare. Employees have access to a comprehensive health screening, health risk assessments and even a coach to help employees prepare for a life-style change. Preventive health programs include annual free flu vaccinations, diabetes and Hypertension Management Programs, PAP smears, mammograms and prostrate exams.”

Intel Malaysia has invested significantly in its work environment to make it more effective, efficient, productive, and enjoyable for its employees. In addition to setting up its New Corporate Office Standard to include flexible work areas such as community zones, collaboration rooms and phone booths for private conversations, Intel has spent over RM3.5 million on ergonomic furniture and accessories including PC stands, leg support and keyboards for special needs employees.

Intel also invests over RM400 thousand every year on its Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The EAP is a 24-hour call center that offers professional assessment, referral and short-term consultation services to employees with work-related or personal challenges.
